community celebration of diversity and heritage
Sneinton Festival is: a village fete, a celebration, a carnival, a parade, a cultural event - in the wonderful and unique village of Sneinton, Nottingham, England.
The first festival was held in 1984, and has since been run by volunteers from the community for the community! Always involving local residents, local organisations, community groups, community gardens, schools, churches, the mosque, youth and play groups, artists, musicians, performers and local project workers.
"I remember the Viking society coming out fully decked out in full regalia, axes and plaits galore. They certainly added a unique flavour to the parade as they would roar out 'Odin!' at the top of their lungs at regular intervals!"
Rich, 37
"I remember it as a whirlwind of colour and creativity; a beautiful expression of the melting pot that is Sneinton - where anyone can be at home and find their place. Strong hippy vibes which I always loved as well ! "
Ruth, 36
"I loved it last year when we walked down Sneinton Dale and I carried a banner"
Elliott, 8
"it inspires so many people to get involved in the community in other projects and to see the importance of this. Community festivals are done by local people for local people and so this is a great example of communities doing things for themselves and better than anyone else could do for them! I think the street parade in Sneinton is very important as it says to the community for one day you are more important than the cars!"
"I remember taking my son when he was tiny. There's a lovely picture of him sat in a yurt with his little baby friend."
Kathryn, 44
"I remember making the banner with Anna for the bus. Kids would come to the library and make beautiful fabric faces, we glued and sewed them together to make a big banner, it was so good. It was really nice and such good fun."
Michelle, Happy Monday's Play Group
'The year we had 25 Past the Skank headlining the after party at the Lord Nelson was off the chart. Such good vibes. The other was when we had nearly 100 Sneintonites of all ages, shapes and sizes doing Kundalini yoga together. If you've never seen it, it's more like a dance workout than yoga. Amazing.'
